My take on the high school thing is that it's an alternate universe; they aren't the same characters. Changing them from ponies to humans is a bigger change than shifting their age by a few years.

...wait, i thought that was explicitly the case. the only one who's the same character is Twi becasue she's the only one that goes through the mirror, everyone else is an alternate reality version.
