B: It has to take place somewhere within season 3, since the Crystal Kingdom is back to normal, and Twilight isn't a princess yet.

The other thing about the "prom crown is a plot macguffin" theory is that nothing about it really necessitates human world. The exact same story could have happened in Equestria, even if they might have had to make the CMC do it because the manes are all out of school.

It's not a death sentence, but it does make it seem like it was written for gratuity's sake rather than having an essential point.

I'll admit that the Twilight eating the apple as if she still had a horse body was pretty amusing, but my appreciation of gags can only hold out if the quality of the story is also of good quality, I'm still going to approach this one cautiously.

As much as I love to see AU!Shining, blue-haired guy has a different symbol on his shirt, and most of the characters seem to have their cutie mark somewhere on their clothes. Sunset's is on her shirt, most of the others have theirs on their skirts. Also when the guy was leaked he was described as being Twilight's boyfriend. Well, one-half of the rumor is true so far...

Anyways, lets take a headcount from the trailer.

The rest of the Mane Six, Spike, Celestia, Luna, and Cadance are present when Twilight is off on her way to the Alternate Universe. Also, right as she arrives in the Crystal Throne Room, there's one guard partially covered by a horn/flag thing that has orange-ish fur and isn't sparkling like the other Crystal guards. Shining Armor is no where to be found in that opening scene.
The CMC, Snips & Snails, and Vinyl Scratch are all accounted for in the Alternate Universe. One pony kinda looks like Carrot Top, but I didn't see any carrots.
Sunset Shimmer, straight up villain. Hard to tell if she's a native of the universe or not.
Twilight remarks that Magic isn't working in the EG world. Again, later the crown appears to be the Element of Magic which Sunset Shimmer wears and there's a huge magical explosion.

Also, this bit from the news article amuses me.

“We are responding to the desire by our fans to experience the brand in more ways, ” said John A. Frascotti, Hasbro’s chief marketing officer. “They imagined themselves as which pony they would be or which pony they identified with the most.”

So Hasbro created Equestria Girls, a parallel world in which the My Little Pony characters were reconceived as teenage girls in high school.

I gotta say, that's a strange leap in logic for the creation of a new IP :P

@Drenius: I totally agree, but the fact that they're using that sort of humor at all helps show how they approached it. When I watched I was afraid it was going be purely a high school drama, and it doesn't look like that at all.

I say Sunset is the "clueless anagonist". She is just yer standard Libby, and has no idea the forces she's messing with in regards to that crown. She just thinks that it's the usual costume jewlery for the prom, and that Twilight is an upstart trying to break her perfect string of prom victories during her term at school.

It'd be nice if there were a secondary antagonist who's actually after the crown for what it really is.
