It's a bit interesting, at least for me.
Over an all-gen rewatch, it's interesting to see the elements of Friendship is Magic getting inspiration from and what was influenced by what came before.
G3 for all it's differences to FIM for instance, coined the terms Cutie Mark, anypony/everypony, and a similar sense of humour. Plus it shared a lot of
V As.

So, quick theory/rambling. there are actually a good many unicorns who, like Twilight, hve a aptitude for magic in all its forms. As opposed to unicorns who have a specific talent/passion and develop magic to aid that purpose, this other class of unicorn can theoretically learn any sort of magic. However, they can only acquire spell knowledge through focused study, as while the knack of spellcasting comes naturally, they have not the instinctual focus to create spells naturally. It's the sorcerer vs wizard thing. Rarity is the former, and Twilight is the latter.
full-spectrum unicorns (note to self: find a better term) are often made to enroll in magic academies, so as to find the field of magical study that they want to focus on. Twilight, for example, seems to be attempting to spread into as many branches of magic as possible (though she seems to have a knack for evocation, transmutation, and spacial magic). Trixie, on the other hand, focused her studies on glamours and object animation.

Most of the fanfics I see have Twi been sent to confront her evil parallel universe twin.
