I think the comic was a great way of re-establishing Chrysalis as a
villain villain, while at the same time exploring her downfalls. Ultimately, she loses because she fails to- no, because she
refuses to understand what she deals with. She sees love as nothing but a food source, or perhaps a power source. She knows how to push buttons, and how to set up situations to strengthen ties so that they'll be ripe later on, but she herself loves no-one, and does not
want to. Similarly, when it comes to magic, she doesn't truly understand that either. She was surprised to find herself defeating Celestia. She didn't know how Twilight could pull off the feats she did, and she ultimately didn't understand how to
use the power of the Secretariat Comet.
I think it would be an interesting story to explore a Changeling who doesn't want to play the part of a predator any more, but it's pretty clear that Chrysalis is
not one who would ever go down that road. In that way, she is closer to truly evil than Discord, despite being a far lesser threat in general.
I may be overthinking her character, but overthinking is so much fun.
