Cool. In the Austraeoh-verse, they're another tribe, and have this weird mana-channeling ability that makes them glow and gives unicorns splitting headaches and nausea when they use it. A group of earth pony mercenaries are enslaving them and using the magic they generate to power their base.

My thoughts. They were originally normal ponies, but generations of exposure to the Crystal heart slowly altered them enough to where they are now a distinct separate race. And if one spent a long enough time away from the Heart, they would lose some of he more obvious qualities, while others are ingrained on genetic level. Just like a pony who lived in the Empire long enough would start to take on some traits os a CP, but only one who was born from a gernation of two of ponies that had been exposed would be a full Crystal Pony.

Perhaps the crystal ponies aren't actual ponies at all, but energy beings from outside reality possessing crystalline facsimiles of ponies, and the Crystal Heart is a super weapon used to convert ponies into inanimate crystal which the Crystal Empire citizenry then possess.

Journalism is just a gun. It's only got one bullet in it, but if you aim right, that's all you need.

Nah, the price has went out of my range. I've no juice left to fight.
At least you realized this and avoided wasting your money.

Rare as they are, I know what they're worth, and they've gone past that mark.
And I'm accepting Crystal Ponies, like Bat Ponies, as magical mutants.

Has anyone ever read the fanfic Green? It's not the most well-written story, but is a pretty enjoyable slice of life shipping fic
In particular the pinkielight chapters are pretty amusing. In one, they're making cupcakes when Pinkie adds an unknown pink substance to the mix and creates a working cold plasma laser. Not to mention having this gem:
Twilight: "Okay, I have to know, which movie were you imitating?"
Pinkie: The Princess Bridal. Hello! My name is Indigo Monponya! You stole my cupcakes! Prepare to dine!"
Zagreus sits inside your head, Zagreus lives among the dead.
Zagreus sees you in your bed, And eats you when you're sleeping.

@Dark (I find it somewhat unsettling to refer to you as "abomination"): I was gonna say something about how would they know what movies are, then I remembered movies are canon in MLP.
