Seriously, if I was head writer for the show, after S1 you'd get maybe one or two new characters per season and the Mayor, Cheerilee, the Cakes, and Spa Ponies would all have had episodes by now.

Up to the end of season 2, I could tolerate including the new characters; after all, the setting is still being established (although you can say it should be done by the end of season 1).

But after that you better get to building on what you already have.

@JT: I wouldn't want them to forgo adding new characters completely, but I agree that the side cast needs more spotlight. That's one of the things that make Simpsons work so well back when it was working, you could grab any random Springfield resident, throw them together with one of the family members, and bam, comedy. Well developed side characters can really help the show to keep from becoming stale in the next couple seasons.

Seems that all of the bad ideas people didn't want to happen happened all at once (it remains to be seen if they will all actually be liked).

"We took every idea we knew was bad and crammed them into the non-canon movie, so we wouldn't be tempted to use them in the show itself."

@Irish: Oh right, yeah, him too.

@Crow: Yeah, that's why I said I'd still have a few. Just none of these "showing up for only one episode and then never seeing them again outside of cameos" things. Like I would have had Hoity Toity or Photo Finish show up two or three more times over the course of the season.

because God forbid the writers reuse a character so they can build on them and make them deeper, that would be pandering

Not sure if sarcasm, but they did bring Trixie back, so it's not like it's unprecedented.

@Kyler: Yeah, but she's the exception rather than the rule. She's the only one-shot character who actually ended up playing a major role in a later episode.

Also, I should note that one thing I really liked about S3 was how it developed previous characters more. Spitfire, Trixie, Shining Armor, Cadance, and Discord all returned, and Babs returned in short order after being introduced rather than being forgotten about.

@Kyler: I was specifically mocking the reaction some people had to Trixie coming back. There were some people calling it pandering, while I thought of it as good use of established cast. I'd be a bit disappointed if she doesn't show up again at some point, though not before some of the other characters.

Yes, more Zecora please. I was sort of hoping in season two that she'd become a mentor of sorts to Applebloom. Still would really like to see something like that happen.

Good point, they are getting better about it. Hope the trend continues next season.
