I like to think Sombra fate wasn't what princess planned. It was something like Sombra plan B in case he couldn't beat princesses.
Or simply both sides didn't had full victory.

Funnily enough, there was another Twilight in a later G1 episode who was a pegasus rather than a unicorn. [Coincidence, I think not.

@Dark: The reason why Celestia kept an eye on Twi was that she and her mother had uncanny resemblences to one of the ancestor ponies from Dream Valley, the original Twilight.

That's reminded me, Fizzy might be an ancestor of Derpy. They don't look alike, but they do have very similar personalities and she had a talent for making magic bubbles. And while I'm at it, the Night Mare is from the same race as the Ursa Minor.

Nightmare Moon, Sombra, Discord... those are in our minds because we see them again in the present. The mane six learning about the history of a hundred villains that are now piles of sunburned ash doesn't make for a very thrilling episode.
