Applejack was true to herself and went home.

Pinkie got hers after bringing laughter to her family.

Dash wouldn't have gotten hers if she hadn't displayed loyalty to Fluttershy.

Fluttershy got hers after being kind to the frightened animals.

Not like it matters, though. I mean Friendship is Magic, after all.

^^^Just one more blot on the plot of the first episode. Putting friendship there would have invoked Power of Friendship and the title, instead of mostly carrying A Wizard Did It connotations.

I like all of this except the part where Dash's loyalty almost knocked Fluttershy to a pancakey death.

I can't decide if that was in character for Dash or not.

On the one hand, Dash is the type to ignore everything else when there's a race on...

...but on the other, Dash is also the type who would drop anything, even her chance at living the dream! to help a friend in need.

...I also found it incredibly hilarious that Fluttershy is the flag girl, as the flag girl is often what people are racing to, you know, win.

Magic is what makes friendship complete.

Well she was racing for her honor. I wouldn't be surprised if that got used as shipping fuel.

Also that analysis of how the marks relate to the elements is neat, but you left out Rarity's generous effort and donation of her gems to improve the show. Also, Twilight used magic before she got her cutie mark, it's just that it didn't come until she went super saiyan and was accepted as Celestia's student.

I kind of wonder what it means that friendship is said to be a kind of magic in this show, or that magic is what completes friendship. Maybe it's hinting at parallels between the difficulty of analyzing both magic and the psychology and emotions related to friendship.
