@stevebat: Yes, that's what Applelight's situation sounds like to me as well, along with emotional abuse. Unfortunately, I don't know what kind of support services Ireland has for young adults in his situation.

To connect this with ponies, I wonder if the show would ever go into the idea of abusive parents, or if that would be considered to be too dark for the intended audience. If they did, I would imagine that it would have a happy ending where the abused foal finds support through his/her friends and other caretakers who are able to either reform the parents or are at least punished and the abused foal goes to live with a more loving caretaker. Or it comes up in a character's backstory, perhaps.

I'm not sure the series has touched a topic nearly as heavy as that yet.

I don't think they'll ever cover it, but I have confidence in the staff to write a good episode for such heavy matters.

Emotional abuse is rough. It really messed me up. Left me believing that my existence actively made the world a worse place. And I was already suicidally depressed.

@Applelight: I really wish I knew what to say in that situation, but I've got nothing. The only suggestion I can make is to put all the cash into a bank account or something so when your mom tries to mooch you can truthfully say that you don't have anything to give her. If you ever need cash for some reason just get it from an ATM. Don't let her know you have an ATM card though.

Anyway, regarding the subject of abuse, I pretty much agree with what Ace said. I think it's a bit too dark for the show to cover in a realistic fashion, but if they would take a swing at it I think they could pull it off. Although it's more likely that it would probably be a bit softened for the target audience.

And yes, Twilight as an aunt would be hilarious.

If you let Pinkie babysit their kid, she'd probably turn them into a miniature prankster of sorts. And there would be lots of groundings as a result.

That kid would probably turn out pretty awesome though. Two good parents, six awesome if slightly crazed "aunts" and their snarky dragon friend; it'd be a colorful bunch raising that child. (Literally and metaphorically.)
