Honestly I still think Sweetie could sing metal - you heard her belt out gospel, after all. Thing is I can only imagine her singing symphonic or power metal. Screamo is right out. Though it would be kind of funny to see her try it, and then immediately start coughing because trying to scream hurt her throat.

I was playing a demo of the Cutie Mark Crusades last night, and I realized that I think every single thing Sweetie does is enough to make me D'aw. Not sure how I'm gonna survive this week's episode.

Seriously. Your making fun of someone for not knowing what they want to do with their life. You may as well be telling them that they're going to grow up to do nothing, and become some purposeless hobo. I know Silver Spoon and Diamond Tiara probably didn't quite get that, but still. That's just nasty.

^Yeah... granted, their purposes in life are to be spoiled, overprivileged Libbies, so I almost feel bad for them, too.

They are bullying teenaged brats. That and the cutie mark is both finding the purpose in life and puberty. So of course some of the more jerkish kids will pick on those who haven't gone through with it.

Okay, just to specify:

1. I was just expressing my personal opinion on grimdark fics, not making a blanket statement that all grimdark fics based on the show are bad. I'm fully aware that they can be incredibly well written. I'm just saying that I personally don't see the appeal.

2. If a fic does retain some of the optimistic elements, I wouldn't necessarily consider it grimdark. When I think of that term, I think of stuff like Cupcakes; stories that are set in a Crapsack World of rape, murder, and torture. I don't think that's how the fandom at large tends to use it, but those are the kinds of stories I'm talking about.

EDIT: DT and SS are bitches, but I don't think they're irredeemably awful. I've known plenty of people who were totally douches in elementary/middle school but ended up being quite mature later on.

One of my favourite characters is Blueblood purely BECAUSE he's an asshole. It's the same with these two. I just don't see how people can genuinely hate any one in this show.

Saying someone will be a hobo is a standard insult to us, where no one has a clearly defined purpose. It hardly means anything beyond the standard, 'you're dumb, and suck'.

But in a world where someone's talent and purpose is a physical mark? It's saying they have no purpose in life - and in a place where everyone can see everyone else purpose, that's sort of like saying you may as well not have been born. It's saying everyone has a reason for being except you.

To be honest, I sort of liked them too. They were sort of fun in that bitchy way, and I really like imagining what they're dynamic could be like a bit deeper. Like, I sort of like to imagine Silver Spoon's mark actually means she's more servile, and she dedicated herself to Diamond Tiara, who becomes a rich jeweler or something. So Silver Spoon becomes a sort of butler/advisor. Like Alfred, for Batman.

^They're decent characters (wouldn't call them great, since they're your garden-issue The Libby pair), but they're not decent people. =D I can see how you like them as devices.

I was watching Lesson Zero and I noticed that Spike writes left-handed. Does he usually do so or is it just in that story? Because I was thinking of adding him as an aversion to the Everyone Is Right Handed trope page but wasn't sure if it was just in that story or not.

They were simplistic. All they did was act self-serving and insult Applebloom. Why do you like Blueblood, anyway?

He appears to be ambidextrious.

An example of a douchey character that is also likable and mysterious is HILDA! Seriously. There is so much potential story-lines with her.

My question is this: Are DT and SS putting that much thought into it? I always thought of the insults as more like "we're better than you because we already got our cutie marks" rather than "you don't have a purpose in life!" I seriously doubt a couple of elementary schoolers are thinking about it that hard. Yeah, it can be interpreted that way if you think about it really hard, but I'm doubtful that it's supposed to be an existential crisis.
