And by working on short comics first, it would be less disruptive to alter or outright delete your early works because you decide later that they're not up to snuff.

@Applelight; I'm going to second what Meta said. That's actually exactly what I'm doing in my original work; the initial plot I wanted to do was too much for me, so I'm currently writing little slice-of-life esque things to establish the settings and characters. It's on the back burner now because of school stuff, but it was certainly better progress than going straight for the epic right out of the gate.
