That is a thing. It leads to some pretty awkward and sometimes tragic things for the kids. Especially if they decide not to go back to the community since they are shunned.

@Applelight: Well from what I know only a minority of Amish teenagers and young adults actually go all out in that period of time, most others just engage in some of the activities restricted for older people in the community, since they have "reached maturity".

However if we do take the Old Order Amish analogue to it's natural extreme with Pinkie, then she definitely went all out in "ponyspringa" and never looked back. Which also means that she is now completely cut off from her family.
