Makes me wonder how dangerous a team of trained pegasi can be? They could toss lightning at your homeland, flood the aria, cause a drought and kill your crops... OK, never piss off the pegasi. They're potentially worse than unicorns.

Trixie is capable of summoning storm clouds complete with lightning, but her limit seems to be just one cloud at a time (excluding when she had the Alicorn Amulet).

Also, the best use of the Clear Skies shout in Skyrim is negating Alduin's meteor rain shout.

My guess is that it's one of those "they can simulate the effect with magic, but only pegasi can regularly do it with any degree of efficiency".

Why else would Unicornia need Pegasopolis? (I think that's how they were spelled?)

Luna also did some pretty freaky things with the weather in Luna Eclipsed, but she's probably able to hybridize racial magics in cool ways, so who knows.

Oh hey, speaking of weather, seeing how far the Keys are from Equestria, I don't think Cloudsdale could help out with the weather. So, either they have their own weather factory, or they have uncontrolled weather...gotta decide.

And I'm getting a good grip on shading...sort of...slowly...

I tend to take the 'It's random unless otherwise ordered' approach, personally - such would explain the Everfree, which is not otherwise a demonstratable magical hotspot.

I always assumed it was a descendent of the Night Mare from Moon Dreamers. Yes, it's arguable that the previous continuities were in the same universe to begin with, let alone three unconnected toylines, but just look at the similarities. The writers must have at least taken some inspiration from it. As for the former, I'm sketching out a timeline that may not be quite as far-fetched if the Equestria Girls spinoff establishes a connection with Earth. even if noncanonical.

@Apple: you could have a former Pirate colony that has gone semi-legit :V

My lead, can be a highly accomplished explorer who's traveled the length and berth of Equestria itself as a freelance treasure hunter...mostly raiding places for ancient treasures alone like so many RPG characters. But...his latest find is stolen off him by pirates of Black Bess...so he comes to the Keys to just get it back. But he's always been a lone wolf sort, not great with socializing (or similar). He meets his future crew mates, they overthrow BB and liberate the Keys from them...and he earns his Letter Of Marque from it. Then they go off on the grand voyage.

There. That's what I'll do.

@Kegisak: That's pretty much how I view it as well. Stuff like weather and plants and animals would function on their own if the ponies ignored them, but in a far more random and dangerous way.

The idea of them having to build nests for the wild birds is just weird though.

I've actually written the idea into my blog, in fact - Hoops is a High Altitude Team technician, the team that specializes in predicting future weather patterns so they can be counteracted and properly utilized, based on small details and a variety of calculations(A la real-world meteorologists). Yes: Ditzy, dopy, not-quite-there Hoops... is a mathematical genius.

@Kegisak: A bit of both. My headcanon is that if the ponies wouldn't be controlling it they'd have to deal with hurricanes and tornados and floods and crap like that.
