Yeah, all of the mentions of the staff bailing when things went south are prefaced with "as far as we know". No one's really jumping to conclusions, which I'm thankful for.

I watched the con during the event and it didn't look too bad. Everyone stayed pretty upbeat and a lot of nice Bronies pitched in a nice bit of cash almost on the spot.

If some creeper started harassing the kid VA's.... that's just wrong.
@Lurker: That's really not much better if they assume that they can't rely on bronies to properly manage their convention.
@ Seraph: Oh, okay. Thanks for explaining.

@ mio, given the shear number of succesful pony-cons over the last two years, I really don't think this one single convention falling apart says anything, and the way the fandom pulled together to salvage it.. yeah. It might make them a bit more hesitant about first year cons, and require more cash up front. but the big, established ones have enough of a track record to be good.
Besides, Las Vegas hotels and staff are infamous for being incredibly tight bastards. Not that it's an excuse, but when the money isn't immediate, they'll kick you to the curb.

yeah the con staff just suck at budgeting, or expected they would get more people showing up then they did.
That's because the exact facts are mixed in with rumors and speculation. We don't know that it was a scam. We don't know that the staff bailed. No site with a shred of integrity is going to report on the facts before they actually know the facts.
But what are the facts that are known?
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
Plus they apparently arranged a payment plan for the hotel that would be paid as the con was going on, rather than up front.

If the hotel is paid in advance, there shouldn't be any problem. Though the organizers may lose money in that case.

Yeah, this was... not good, but it's not going to kill off minor cons altogether; people just need to budget better and pay the damn thing in advance. Although honestly, I don't think we need this many minor cons anyway. It would be way easier to just have like 3 or 4 every year rather than having like a dozen.
Yeah, that's what I'm asking.
