I prefer smallish-but-dedicated-followings, myself. widespread popularity is far too much pressure, and takes a lot of the attention from the actual making of it, in my experience. I much prefer small-time.

And yeah, I agree with you about the comic. I thought the art had a charm in it's simplicity but maybe it's too simple.

Mmm... I can definitely see someone liking the art, but I dunno. It's not for me. Those legs man, they just keep jumping off the page at me. Unless it's because it's doing something really cool and weird, the art in a comic should compliment the story, not distract from it.

Sandman's first two volumes are probably the best example I can point to. Gaiman and the artists do amazing things with the panel layout and the art that really lends itself to the dreamland setting, and on their own their gorgeous and terrifying and surreal, but in the context of reading it you barely notice them because the changes are always triggered by or related to the story, so it feels natural rather than some real 'event'. Those backwards legs just stick out at me and stop me thinking about the story.

@Dark: ... you know now that you mention the voice actors, it's weird that Flim and Flam have different voice actors. They're clearly identical twins - they have an unusual model but they have the same unusual model - which would mean they should have the exact same voice. You can't even really call it them using different inflections or tones since I'm pretty sure Flim is a Tenor to Flam's Baritone/baritenor... Although Flam's accent is definitely an affectation, so I suppose it's possible to some degree.

Still. Weird.

I'm going to second Kegisak on the "small but dedicated fanbase" thing. On one hand, yeah, every author kinda wishes that they could be the next Kkat or Short Skirts and Explosions or whoever, but on the other hand when you get that kind of popularity you also start getting haters. I've found with my story that I kind of hit a niche; it doesn't appeal to a wide audience (there are tons of one-shots that have more views and faves), but the people who like it really like it.

That and if I ever got legitimately popular I'd much rather it be for an original work than for a fanfic.
