So, I just read the first issue of the micro-series.
It was pretty good! It was a really sweet story(And I could definitely sympathize with Jade Singer about having to live up to the expectations you set), and there was some pretty funny stuff. It was also a lot of fun trying to puzzle out all the references in there(Really, Twilight? Call me Maybe?
really?).
Writing-wise I think the only problem was that, perhaps necessarily, it was extremely condensed. Not
rushed, per se, because all the important scenes were there and the passage of time felt solid, but it was very fast-paced. Still, I suppose that's one-shots for you.
Sadly, I do have to agree with the general consensus: The art needs a
lot of improvement. I don't know I'd call it out and out bad, but... it was very definitely not good. The sequential storytelling aspect was solid, but the pictures themselves sort of looked like they'd been done by someone who'd seen the show once or twice and never seen an actual horse. I noticed it in particular whenever there was an image of the pony walking their hind legs bent the wrong way, and the posing often looked awkward in general.
So all in all, my view of the first issue of the micro-series? A very nice comic that's marred by some very not-nice art. Keep that writer, get a new artist, and I think the next one could be a great comic.
Also if anyone's interested King's Bounty turned out to be not at all like Fire Emblem and honestly pretty meh. But I'm early in, so we'll see I guess. Story and gameplay might kick in better later.
