@Ed: Aha, Chry's
Couch of villainy from the comic, I see.
Speaking of, I read the comic last night. I was pretty awesome!The girl's characterization was solid(Although I felt lit played a bit too heavily on Dash's ego at times), the antics were a lot of fun(The CMC's overobsession with their cutie marks gets a pass due to being just that funny, especially in how Chrys reacts to it), and the writing was just generally really good. I especially liked how the 'we're fighting now' thing from issue two
wasn't just immediately resolved at the end of it, but carried into issue three as well - and even then, nobody really figured it out(Except Dash, though as I mentioned about her ego I didn't really like
how she figured it out), they just kind of got over themselves.
Chrys is a wonderful villain, slipping very naturally between hilarious and genuinely fucking scary. I mean holy shit, those close up shots where she's snarling? Amazing stuff. The changelings in general are really cool, and they definitely make solid use of them. To be frank I'm actually a bit
sad that this arc is going to be over so soon, because I like Chrys and the changelings just that much.
Art-wise, the comic is phenomenal, especially when put next to the Micro-series. It captures the show's style perfectly while at the same time giving it that bump that reminds you what flash just can't do sometimes. A lot of the girls, especially Pinkie, have been made a lot gummier, and I think it really works well. The stretching and smushing of their faces really amps up the cuteness, and the added flexibility leads to some downright
amazing expressions. The best way to call it is to compare it to the Finale of Wakfu, where the show is the rest Wakfu's season: The animation is
good throughout the season, yeah, but the finale blows it away. Love the style.
One thing in particular I really like about it is the details it adds in to switch between srs and slly modes: The silly times are a lot simpler, and have more exaggerated expressions. The serious times have less gummy expressions, but the details get kicked up a notch, especially in terms of colouring and playing with light. It manages to switch extremely well between Chrys clowning around with her generals and then immediately showing off
why she's a villain extremely well.
To be perfectly frank if there's any one issue I have it's that a few times there was a background character trying to make an exaggerated expression that, because of the small size, came out really really weird. Oh, that and a place on the map called Gelding Grotto: I both really wan't to know why it's called that, and really
don't want to know why it's called that.
So, final verdict: Really good writing that leans a
bit too heavily on specific character traits at times(And if I was being absolutely critical the need to wrap up the contents of the issue at the end can make them feel a bit truncated at times, but for the most part it's fine), and extremely solid art whose only fault comes from being a bit too ambitious. Definitely a fantastic comic.
