I watched the first two-part episode of Littlest Pet Shop. I haven't felt the need to follow it further. Frankly, I was bored.

I saw a clip of a Star Trek parody it did, and it was pretty hilarious. Haven't been motivated to watch any more of it, though.

Yeah given the single most common flaw with the show is that they tend to get rushed or have to fit more into the story the they really have time for. Adding MORE plots, not a good idea.

How far back is Cadance's story even set? We know she rules the crystal empire after the season 3 opener...so was this even further back?

Most likely

Was she the ruler at some point in the distant past, then Sombra happened, and she was put under a spell for a thousand years and came back as a child nearer the current time span and then had to grow up again?

I think she might have been the daughter of the last Queen, or perhaps a further descendent.

Did she even know about the crystal heart until the season 3 opener?

I totally think she did. She knew exactly how that thing works when she caught it at the climax of Crystal Empire Part 2. I mean, just look at her; that is the face of someone who knows exactly what she's got.

Did we miss something in between the opener and the end of the season? And would you even need to find a crystal heart spell if the thing is like...right there?

The heart is there, but who knows what the spell is or does?

I have a message from another time...

On one hand, 22 minutes is barely enough to get the main plot out of the way, but on the other hand, no one said that the B-plot had to be as long as the A-plot. It could always be told through short gags that reach an eventual climax at the episode's conclusion.

Ah yes, Pinkie longing to hear from her one true love...

There are times the show is subtle, and there are times the show is not.

Also, on the Crystal Heart Spell book thing. Oh my Luna, a show-accurate Cadance vector is on the back! Oh yeah, and a possible backstory for Cadance, which is nice but I have a feeling its not going to be very detailed.

So last page we were talking about songs we'd like to use for PM Vs, eh? Well, if I had the skills and time to make a PMV, I'd probably make one with this song since A: It kicks ass and B: somehow I think it fits the series, or at least RD in particular.

To be fair, that thing was pretty obvious to the rest of us too. It didn't really take that much narrative to cover "happy crystal eats happy makes happy shield".
