@Syd: Stuff like that is other half of the reason I very rarely follow anything on tumblr (the first half being the fact that it's a crappy host for comics). There are probably like half a dozen different tumblrs that I'd like if half the posts weren't people either complaining about some element of the show or about something in the fanbase that bugs them. This is what modblogs are for, people.

Star Swirl was trying to harness the power of the Heart of Fire, and was trying to reverse-engineer the effects from Clover's description. Which is why it so easily triggered around the Elements of Harmony, which use that same power, split into six pars.

You know, I really sort of like episodes like this last one that give us new things to speculate about worldbuilding.

and Cadance's child, although not impossible (like in Baby Cakes, maybe one of them has an Earth pony grandparent or something).
Well Alicorns are one third earth pony.

Were the Elements even around when wrote the spell?

Given that he seems to predate the sisters... he was Clover the Clever's mentor, and she predated the sisters.
The issue is Luna apparently knowing about him, down to the way he wore the bells on his cloak.

I just saw a topless anthro Lightning Dust pic on Derpibooru. I wonder how our winged braggart would feel about that?

@Enlong: She could easily have known what he looked like, even if she didn't know him personally. It's soon enough after that there could've been portraits or something hanging around.
That would make some sense. What do you think he was trying to accomplish when he wrote that part of the spell?
I think it
might have had something to do witht he heart of fire phenomenon, bu that's starting to sound like a stretch to me.

Well, we don't know when Celestia and Luna showed up, so it's possible he could have been around when they were. That, or he was long-lived.
Ponies do seem to live into the 100's... so they could have shown up somewhere in his lifespan.
Or maybe the point is that Star Swirl's unfinished spell makes no sense. We don't know what he was trying to accomplish, which is why it stayed a mystery.
But then, how did Twilight come to the conclusion she did? I don't ge, enirely, how she made the connection.

I'm picturing little Woona meeting Star Swirl, and having an ear-to-ear smile on her face. I just hope he understood kids better than he understood friendship.

Starswirl died while writing the spell. The original manuscript has aaaarrrrrggghhhhh... at the end, but later editions edited it out because that's obviously impossible (unless he was taking dictation).
