When I first heard about Twilight becoming a Princess I was hoping she might take on a more diplomatic role, traveling to other places and making friends for the sake of Equestria.
You think there is any chance of that happening? It sort of fits the friendship theme... and she wouldn't have to leave Ponyville permanently... but she might go on missions taking one, two, or all of her friends with her as the situation demands.

The rainbow colored ewes in the Crystal empire episode didnt talk, and I dont think the Sheeps on AJ's farm have ever talked. Doesn't mean they cant though, they might not have much to say.
I would like to think that they have learned their lesson from Appleoosa. They seemed to do a better job at being diplomats in the Crystal empire.

In the DVD commentaries, it was stated the rule is, as far as real animals go, hoofed mammals can talk, everything else can't.

@Kegisak: I know that the C Ms are treated differently, I was just pointing out that there's a precedent for magic being able to screw with them.
@CDRW: I know in one or two episodes they talk. Can't remember which ones though.

The only hooved animal that we haven't seen talk have been pigs (and maybe goats, but they've been shown to have their own language), and they've been shown to be free to do as they please around Ponyville.

Well they did do their best learning Crystalian customs. I'd really like seeing this show become an Adventure Nation show where they go from place to place. Twilight balancing her bookworm personality while trying to be dignified and graceful while Rarity keeps facehoofing all the while.

Hmm, maybe I won't do that sheep joke anyway. It's one too many for the space I'm writing and would kind of wreck the flow. But I really wanted to do one about sheep having a long and respected history of being dragon-slayers because of the flame-retardant properties of wool.

@Orion: I know the commentary he's talking about. The rule of thumb is "Hoofed mammals and mythological creatures can talk". Dragons and griffons and whatnot get in on that rule. Of course the commentaries also insinuated that Spike has feelings for Fluttershy, and that Scootaloo is related to Princess Celestia, so who knows?
