Well, it really depends on what you mean by "a short time". Relative to the life of an alicorn, absolutely! But not compared to the life of an ordinary pony, necessarily.

Personally, I did think it was relatively short. Just not practically immediate.

As for the next alicorn we meet. It will be Cadance and Shiny's foal (Yes, I'm not letting this go).

Hi everyone, it's been a while.

So, did you all like the episode? 'Cause I did. It had a breakneck pace, but I loved it still.

Yeah, the pacing was the only real issue I had with it, too.

Some more buildup of the spell as a Big Important Thing wouldn't have gone amiss.

Like, I get that it was probably the P = NP of unfinished magical projects, but some more hyping of it would have made the ascension carry more weight as a result.

The songs made up for it though. I can't wait for the remixes. It shouldn't be long before season 3's OST will be compiled. Barring that, I really wish Hasbro would release their own official sound track already.

It took me a couple of watchings to really "get" the episode, and when I did it made pretty good sense. I think with a proper marathon of "significant" episodes(most of the season openers/closers, cast establishing episodes, "Twilight advances" episodes, everything with Discord and maybe two with the CMC[probably Sisterhooves Social and Sleepless in Ponyville])it wouldn't seem so forced. Of course she knew how to fix it; the solution is pretty natural when it's exactly what she's been learning over three seasons. Her friends forgot themselves, so she guided them into action that would remind them.

As for Twilight's transformation, the Alicorn part would have been a surprise but besides that it's never been clear what Twilight was actually studying for. What was her eventual goal? You can't be a student forever. Given her surprise it wasn't To Be a Master, but... well, I can't think of a decent alternative myself. That's just my take.

But anyway, my theory is that Twilight ultimately aimed to be a magical researcher or teacher. The next Star Swirl, basically.

So how long will Twilight keep those wings?

Celestia did say something about Twilight having something to teach the others and herself. My personal guess is that the next step is that she's going to take on a student or two like how Celestia was HER teacher. Maybe another young unicorn who is gifted at using magic or maybe a whole class of her own, or maybe even teaching Sweetie Belle how to even use magic in the first place (we've seen her make sparks but not actually use any spells yet).
