And I suppose it would be more prudent of me to wonder if all Alicorns are princeses in the current society.

I think perhaps Platinum's royal family was a casualty of the Discord Era.

Iron Heart Surge is admittedly awesome, but it's one manuevre. I get more manuevre's than warblades or crusadors (honestly, I haven't had the chance to use Tome of Battle in an actual game yet and am sure I'd enjoy any of the classes. But yes. If I had Iron Heart, I would definitely take Iron Heart Surge).

@Sereg: If that were true then we would have seen Twilight trying to memorize incantations before, or seen some unicorn with not as good memory actually saying an incantation.

@ Enlong: Why can't he be both? It wouldn't be far-fetched that to legitimise their rule Celestia or Luna had a marriage/child with the ruling family.

Perhaps spells with incantations are really high-yield ones. Like, ninth-circle stuff, fo the likes we haven't seen used lightly before.

@Badwolfwho: Somehow I doubt that Royal House Platinum had the kind of political influence at that time that they had pre-unification to justify that action. It's more likely that the ponies just gave the Sisters their titles and political power after all they did to help out with Discord.

We saw some fairly high level spells (beyond even Twilight) performed in Magic Duel with no incantations. I just don't think they gel with how we have seen magic work before (which admittedly is rather poorly defined).

Well Discord is known to show up pretty soon after HWE, so there isn't that long for importances to shift.

I think it's likely that some of the leaders were casualties of Discord's reign (what better way to confuse the nations than to remove their leadership?), and Celestia and Luna filled the power vacuum when Discord was defeated.

Do we have a time frame for when the events of dramatized in HWE happened? I don't think we do.

Either way their political situation wouldn't have been much better since 2/3 of the ponies never recognized there authority before and saw them as an enemy.

I can see members of Celestia and Luna's family marying into the unicorn royal family.

Also, I've never seen alicorns as immortal. Just ridiculously long-lived.

EDIT: Yeah. People like to guess that HWE, Discord and Nightmare Moon al hapened in quick succession, but there is no indication of that.

Star Swirl The Bearded was around.

Celestia and Luna know Star Swirl the Bearded well.

Therefore, Discord's reign is likely to have taken place during Star Swirl The Bearded's lifetime.

@ Mio: Luna knew Starswirl the Bearded. Luna and Celestia didn't come to Equestria until after Discord took it over. Clover was Starswirl's pupil. Ergo Discord showed up fairly quickly after Hearth's Warming Eve. And given that the races aren't enemies anymore their situation's gotten better.

Actually there is for the first two. Nightmare Moon and Sombra I see as happening quite a while afterwards.

As I make clea in my fanic, in my version of Equestria, Celestia and Luna suffered alongside their subjects for centuries before discovering the elements.

And I'm not lone in this. The same is true of My Little Alicorn, for example.

Celestia's statement seems to be that they did not rule Equestria until after they defeated Discord. That does not necessarily mean that they were never in Equestria before then.

I will admit that it does lend credence to Discord arriving very quickly after HWE, though there is nothing to indicate that Sombra or Nightmare Moon followed quickly afterward.

I wonder, though. You would think that the history of the Royal Sisters would be mentioned in the story of the founding if they were around at the time. Not to mention what a pair of Alicorns would do to the sort of rigid class structure of the three nations.

Does Twilight rule anything yet, or is naming her a "princess" a formality after her ascension?
