Trademark, not copyright. Keep your terms straight.

Terms can get bent out of shape easily. Iron them whenever you get the chance.

It said it was a companion series, which tells me that it's definitely not cancelling the main series, because if it was, it wouldn't be companion to anything, but would rather be a sequel series.

Yeah, I'm not worried about girliness. FFS, I like Rarity.

My concern is the shallowness. This show worked because the staff went to an immense amount of trouble building up a breathing world, and unusually complex characters whose most important traits stem directly from that worldbuilding and from twisting otherwise familiar archetypes in creative ways to fit into that alien setting in a way that no other setting could.

Turning it into a cheap fanfiction style High School AU eviscerates all of that. You lose the interesting and alien setting. You make them too young to have the adult jobs that in many ways define them and the world around them. You remove pretty much everything that made them meaningful characters and reduce them to a voice and a hairstyle.

Assumptions, assumptions.

Or did you travel to the future and had already seen the spinoff?

If it's worth watching, it'll be because of characteristics that have nothing to do with FIM. As in, you could make everyone not have pastel skin, rename them, not tell anyone it was based on ponies, and it would be the exact same show.

Hell, I've read the occasional decent High School AU too. I've yet to see one whose spinoff-ness actually added anything it wouldn't have had as original fiction.

Except that, you know, we don't know how it's going to turn out. We think it's going to be a High School AU. We don't know if it'll be shallow, fanfictiony, or cheap. Again, we can't assume stuff like that based off the summary. If we go by the logic that it's going to be bad because other High School AU shows are bad, it means we should assume that FIM is bad because previous incarnations of the franchise were bad.

And like I said before, I don't think losing the magic necessarily means that the show will lose depth, just that it has to find that depth elsewhere. Case in point, a lot of my favorite episodes ("Sisterhooves Social", "Party of One", "Green Isn't Your Color", "Look Before You Sleep") don't rely on the magical aspects of the setting and are almost entirely character based. I'm sure the writers could figure out how to put stuff like that into an high school setting.

1. Does that really matter? They're obviously spinning off because they want to do something different with the characters.

2. Just because they change some of the elements of the show doesn't mean they'll change them all. The characters might remain the same, even if the setting is different. And honestly, I'm not really sure that's a bad thing. I like the setting of the show, but the characters have always been the biggest draw, and I think they can stand on their own.

I think the main question I have now is if magic is involved. The show is made in flash, so a lot of the pony models have horns & wings and they're just turned off (or forgot to be turned on/off) depending on the characters. If these character models are indeed the leaked models, are there no horns and wings or are these models just have that feature turned off? Would there be magic & flying anyways?

And will Nightmare Moon be the evil Vice Principal? Gotta have that in a High School AU.

Hopefully they delve into some of the major shoujo anime/manga for inspiration.

So.. if it is a HS series... you think they are going to shoehorn the chars into stereotypical roles... IE RD as a sports jock and Twilight as the valedictorian/classpresident/geek?

They may. But if the writing works, they can rise above stereotyping.
