It is in the nature of the spiteful to spread animosity.
Also, oh, I guess Rarity's parents really did have faith in her abilities, even from a young age. Even if they aren't really into fashion; I can't deny that they allowed her to pursue her dream to its fullest extent. They also must have been pretty accepting of her attempting to be high class, with all its affectations and such; even though it's a far cry from their lifestyle. Now that I think about it, that's some pretty darn good parenting.
Unlike Fluttershy's parents who don't approve of her lifestyle at all.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
We don't know anything about them, but I have my fanon.

Yeah. We know that Twilight's parents are around, Pinkie's are hiring downtrodden stage magicians for their farm, Rarity's are embarassing, Rainbow's father was around at some point in her childhood, and that Applejack's parents are never home and were never really in her life, to the point that Applejack's stopped hoping that they'll come around for the next reunion.
But we know nothing about Fluttershy's past.

I have a message from another time...
They're in space. Space parents.
Speaking of the Crystal Ponies, I've always assumed since I first heard of them that they're descendants of the twinkle-eyed ones from G1. I've always thought Fluttershie was an orphan, there's no way parents would keep their kid so isolated and awkward around pony society.
"Welcome. You have entered the cranial vistas of psychogenesis. This is the place of no-time and no-space. Do not be afraid."
The thing about symbolism is that sometimes it can mean several things.

The parents aren't confirmed dead. They could just be negligent and estranged. I'm not sure which is worse, though.
True. And sometimes there's like one really obvious thing that it can mean, and some other stuff you kind of have to stretch to make fit.
True. There exist situations like that.

Didn't one of the show workers confirm that the parents=dead thing was intentional?
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
It was intentional, but it was inserted by the storyboarders, not the writers. Nothing about it is set in stone.
