I'm trying to drum up enough courage to start up a fanfic. I've always wanted to write one, but the inferiority guilt tripping part of my brain says otherwise.

Just go ahead and start writing. You'll never get anything done if you don't start.
@Syd: Awkward Sibling Hug is a Gravity Falls reference.
I mean, if it gets turned into "<" anyway, they might as well display it as "<", right?
It's probably overzealous entity encoding. See "<" in normal text is a special code that will display as a "<". However, a poorly designed parser may turn <s into >s even in places where such codes won't display correctly, such as inside links and preformatted code sections.

Hello everyone. What'd I miss from the threadhop?
Oh, the thread? Don't worry, it's just dead
.
Incidently, the fact that my & gt ; got turned into a > is also problematic, because they should be escaping the ampersands too, so that kind of thing doesn't happen. After all, the goal is for what is displayed to match what people actually typed, while also preventing XSS.

I wonder what a headless horse would taste like.
It is in the nature of the spiteful to spread animosity.
Probably like any other horse.
But still...IT'S A HORSE WITHOUT A HEAD!!!

... Is that a life sized Spike plush?
I never got that trope. Something can be detailed, but never scary. Humanlike qualities are just comforting to me, even if it's not quite perfect. For instance, I have a good sized Amy Rose plushy I think is cute even though the body has fairly detailed human features while still being cartoony.
