I think you should be shipping Bats and Lyra instead. Have Lyra be ultra into weird mutations and subspecies.

To better explain it, when they first meet, the normally forthright Batty will become uncharacteristically blustered, and as they hang out more, Flutters will give him some compliments that go a little far, making her blush and change the subject. Y'know, stuff like that.

@ Apple: Experiment a little before setting their relationship in stone. You don't want to rush into a silly "love-at-first-sight" kinda deal anyway, so why not have Bats and Flutters interact without romantic undertones at first, and see if there is any chemistry?

As I like to say it: "If your readers are shipping the characters before you've even gotten to that point in the story, you've done a great job."
