Tiggers Are Great: The complaints issued to Family Guy are less there are no clear cut Straight Men, but more there are no characters capable of basic clarity anymore. There's a difference between a flawed character and one with next to no redeeming aspects whatsoever. It's even worse when they actually try to put one of them on a pedestal and they usually come off as nothing short of hypocritical Designated Heroes (eg. Lois or Brian).
My issue with AJ is said spotlight episodes don't do a very good job displaying her
Not so Above It All qualities anymore, either because she is
Out of Focus or because they are kind of watered down in execution. I have no problem with her occasionally being a
Straight Man or even being one primarily, so long as we get her flaws displayed vividly enough at a substantial rate. Apple Family Reunion was supposed to be her token character defining episode this season, but it felt mundane and recycled a plot more fitting to one of the other ponies.
This is why I liked S1 Applejack, she still was often the Straight Man but her flawed roles were done frequent and well enough she seemed like a developed character, if not one of the most developed of the main six.
Straight Man don't
have to be bland and normal anyway, most of them are in fact haughty, bad tempered or highly neurotic, as such as much humor is from their reactions as the wacky character's antics. S1 AJ, who was more distinctively irritable even in her moments of clarity seemed to have a better balance.
