I like to imagine that a major part of the initial scare was her change in physical appearence since the last time they saw her. I think that her size change and ethereal mane could have very well made them think that history was repeating itself. She, erm "assuaged" that with the content of her speech, but the way she went about
saying it didn't help matters one bit. Then everything went downhill later, with the spiders.
Speaking of her speech, I think that was one of my favorite parts, just hearing what she was actually saying there. Think about it: she makes it clear that she knows what the holiday is, and just why it's called
Nightmare Night. And she isn't at all resentful of any of that. To the contrary, all she wants is to show them that she's a changed mare, and wants to make the holiday a joyous one. It takes her some time to figure out that it already
is one.
