I imagine a volcano, which at a quick glance looks normal, but upon closer inspection and subsequent approach, one can see pipes and steam valves snaking in and out of its rocky surface. And, right at the bottom of it all, a reinforced steel door. Hey, they're dangerous, so I imagine they'd restrict access to the control room.

I don't see either as very dwarf like. A big part of it is living underground. And neither of them do.

If it's regular dwarves, maybe earth ponies, with them valuing hard work and being tougher than the rest. The "valuing gems and gold" thing apparently has only applied to unicorn nobility, which, as any nobility would, love themselves some bling. It doesn't seem like something inherently unicornish.

Aside form the name though there's no relation to Pegasi. Thunderbolt Iron refers to meteors, which as under astronomy seems like if anything it'd be Unicorns.

@ Apple: You can't really say that though. We have two confirmed sources of drink in the show. The Apple Family and Flim/Flam who are Unicorns. Plus Pegasi manipulate water.

As far as I can tell, high-level poker play is not about chance so much as it is about psychology and manipulation. Rarity would probably be good at that.
