Well, I'm just back from watching The Hobbit myself now. That was fun. Reminds me of how I agree that if ponies are humanised, unicorns should be elves.

I guess it's funny that in a setting where there are other sentient races, humans are suddenly low-tier in the intelligence hierarchy. I mean, considering how we're used to being at the top, normally.

Actually, at one stage, I was going to make the two Earths in my crew correspond to the Halfings and Ogres of Warhammer Fantasy. Because believe it or not...they are sister species.

These are Ogres◊...ten foot tall, two tonne killing and eating machines. Their entire society is built around eating and migrating to find something to eat. And this is a halfling◊...a 3 and a half foot tall eating and...fornicating...machine with deadly skill with a bow or sling. What do they both have in common? They were made together at the same time by the Precursor Race, and thus share the same love of eating and resistance to the dark forces of evil. To this day, when Ogres meet Halfings...they get on with each other and bond over food. And neither side knows why.

I was going to do a similar dynamic with my Earths...one is a giant, super strong, Hulk speaking tank...and the other is a tiny little master cook with a naughty streak and improbable aiming skills. I sort of abandoned that idea but...what do you all think of it?

My reaction was more, time to play all those games I bought last summer in the Humble Bundle. I've already palyed through Limbo and have just started Psychonauts.

If they were made by the same race, I wonder if it were possible for them to procreate? What would oneo f thier offspring be like? Either way, that actually seems like a decent idea, Apple. Ep would make the best cook anyhow, due to their amping magic.

As for the race distrubution, in the Five Races model the EP's would be stout, and the Pegais probably High Men - elves. The unicorns are more akin to Fey.

Of course, Tolkein didn't have an analogue for the Fey, so... Actually all things considered in terms of racial culture, the split is more like Pegasi = Dwarves(Agressive, hardy and boistrous. In general), Unicorns = Elves(Aloof, Magical, slightly pompous) and Earth Ponies = Hobbits(Simple, pleasent, content to farm the land). At least, going by the Hearth's Warming tribes. By the time the series roll around things are much more cosmopolitan.

@Apple I kinda like the idea, although maybe you should give the big one a bigger role other than just being the crew's tank, I think.

I saw The Hobbit. I'm not a Rings fan and haven't read of the books, but I enjoyed it.

I wish I could marathon Pony, but I'm too busy at the moment.

I agree, but I'm not sure as to what he could do.

Oh, and here's an interesting thought...Unicorns lived in mountains and liked precious stones right? Well...Warhammer Dwarfs also live in mountains, and have a lust for gold that is seen as a curse on their entire race. OK, they love ale too, and are the only race who can't practice magic (they have a very high resistance to it though), which I don't see Unicorns doing obliviously, but it's a thought.

No comparison is going to be exact, since these are all very different and fleshed out mythologies.

What does this fanbase have against fluffy ponies?

It's a long story, involving 4chan, copious amounts of abuse, memes, spamming, angry artists and timing coinciding with the end of Ponibooru. Apparently something similar happened previously with Touhou, too, so that might have kickstarted the abuse trend in the first place. Nowadays it's just overexposure.

Man, ponies are really coloring my thinking lately.

I went Christmas shopping today, and saw a store called Batteries and Bulbs. Of course, I immediately thought Quills and Sofas.

Then later at Target, this little girl found a bicycle helmet decorated like a cake, went up to her mother, and said "Look mom, I'm a cupcake!" and I thought OH GOD NO!

They're most likely saving her for a really good moment (that they can get away with) for her.

Alternatively, the next big villain gets their ass kicked by Derpy.
