Manehatten as an Earth Pony city is far more developed and economically active than Canterlot, which is still stuck in the academic/pre-Industrial Revolution stage.

What makes you think Manehatten is an Earth Pony city? Every city we've seen other than Cloudsdale (for obvious reasons) has had plenty of each race living in them.

You know, using the Tome of Battle really helps balance things out.

The primary footage of Manehatten gives it the impression of being primarily Earth Ponies who live there, what with the lack of BG unicorns in the majority of Manehatten shots and no pegasi or pegasi cloud structures. It gives me the impression that the Earth ponies are the growing Merchant class that will gradually eclipse the old Unicorn aristocracy in Canterlot.

I tend to think of Manehatten as a sort of larger-scale Ponyville. Founded by Earth Ponies, and so they make up the majority of the population, but other tribes have moved there since - it appears to be onbe of the ore industrialized city, so there's a lot of opportunity. Besides, they'd need their own weather crew at the very least. They just don't allow for cloud structures. Pegasi have to liveo n the ground like everypony else.

Actually, my Hoops and Dumbbell tumblr is set there. I was thinking of making a joke sometime about them running up against air traffic laws.

There's all 3 races everywhere, but some are dominated by one race.

Once the Expanded Universe picture book Under the Sparkling Sea comes out, we'll probably have fuel for speculation about what, if any, contact Manehatten and/or other coastal cities have with seaponies or mermares...

Whatshisname: I'm sure there are some Pegasi cities that are either close to ground level or built on mountaintops. Places like Los Pegasus.

Kegisak's take is basically how I take Manehattan. Founded by and predominantly inhabited by Earth Ponies, but ponies of other races live there as well.

Overall, my idea is that there are more EP cities, but that the non-EP cities have a greater concentration of the founding race. I.e. Cloudsdale is probably like 90-95% pegasi. Unicorn cities probably don't have such an extreme percentage, but there are probably still more unicorns than other races. Like Canterlot is predominantly a unicorn city; maybe like 50% unicorns.

Pegasi are more likely to live in Cloudsdale and then just fly to wherever, whereas the other races more likely live where they work. Earth Ponies are less likely to live in areas like Canterlot because mountain regions aren't as farmable, so they have less reason to live in the area.

@J Teeth: Is Cloudsdale really that close to every place that it would be practical for more Pegasi to commute from their? That really doesn't seem likely, more likely that there are only a few places that are close enough for Pegasi to commute to, meaning that most of the others either work in Cloudsdale proper or live where they work.

@JT: Not many pegasi can get the kind of airspeed/stamina need to travel all over Equestria by flight from Cloudsdale in a single trip.
