Thing what hapen to Luna is corruption of Dark Side. I don't see reason for other speculation if that is suported by show canon.

@Red: That's basically what I've been saying all along. It's a thousand years of culture shock. That and it looks like even before the imprisonment it seems she didn't get a whole lot of interaction with the commoner ponies. And the idea of Luna inadvertently corrupting herself does make a lot of sense.

^The Dark Side, even in Star Wars, doesn't work like that. You can manipulate someone down the Dark Side, but you can't just wave your hand and shout You are evil now. Okay?

But you can wave your hand and say "You're a jerk now". At least if you're Discord.

I just imagined it as a snap decision on Luna's part.

"FUCKETH THIS! I NEED MORE POWER! I NEED... UNLIMITED POWER!!"

and then the resulting spell ate away at her mind until she became evil

I can see Fanon!Woobie!Luna saying something like "I wanna be like my big sister!" and doing that.

"They worship our elder sister, the more powerful and skilled of we two, though we be called equals... Perhaps if we possessed more power, they would worship us in equal measure... or at the least, like us..."

After Woobie!Luna transformed herself into NM, she tried to act like Celestia to be like her sister. But because of her new powers, she started destroying things, and the only thing Celestia could do was use the Elements of Harmony.

In terms of power, I'd assume that Luna might've needed an extra boost to be able to keep the moon up forever. Her and Celestia are roughly equals, so a bit more magic might've been necessary to keep Celestia's sun away

Nightmare Moon is just a huge attention whore.

Although, that is essentially what she is. People just like Luna more, so they made Celestia a fascist dictator.

Like Prince Blueblood being Celestia's nephew as "the great great great great great great great great great great great (and probably even more greats) nephew on Celestia's and Luna's mother's side, about 52 times removed, roughly speaking." Am I the only one that thought she made that number up on the spot to get the point across that he's not really Celestia's nephew and is only called as such due to Executive Meddling?

As for the "our dark powers" bit, I thought it was funny that while talking about losing her "dark powers" she blankets the sky and summons lightning. Her momentarily turning into Nightmare Moon again seems to suggest as, whatever "corrupted" her, it was Luna's choice to go down that path in the first place. That's the way I see it, anyways.

Well, the laconic version of that trope is "evil is addictive and corruptive". That seems to fit with the idea of "Luna called up magic she could not put down in a bid for power and recognition, and it ate at her mind". Which is a theory I very much like.

Yeah, that's pretty much my theory as well

I just dislike the term for some reason.

^^^She could have been, but that's some slow burn, since she and Celestia locked Discord away with the Elements before Luna snapped. It doesn't seem his style.
