I think Still Spell makes the spell occupy a spell slot one level above the unaugmented pell.

Agreed.

Though at the moment, I think potions are the best bet for EP 'magic'.

Yeah. So I mean, you're basically pulling one level less than you could otherwise... but you can make up for it by being a magical tank. Especially if you had a buff spell in there for defense.

[up][up][up][up]Hm. I guess that's not so much, but I'm sure there are other reasons you won't necessarily be putting your wizard in heavy armor soon.tongue

...Man, I really need to find another group to play D&D with...

So, Alchemy and herbology? I'd say those are logical fits for Earth Pony magic. I even think I suggested something similar some time ago.

[up]Not to mention their touch AC would be a joke and they'd likely lose any dex bonuses they might otherwise have. Besides, I know of few people who want to be reduced to a 15-20 foot movement.

Yeah! Hell...potions could in theory do anything...could be a game breaker really!

Maybe an earth pony could carry around a whole lot of artifacts that are enchanted or that have spells stored in them to be used whenever.

[up][up] If it's anything like Morrowind, and you can make potions that make you better at alchemy to make better potions that make you even better at alchemy and create a loop that turns an average alchemist into a god, then yeah, OP.

[up]With extra earth pony strength to carry a ton of them.

Oh, the thread? Don't worry, it's just dead.

@ Apple: Well, I'd argue they couldn't do anything, but I can imagine potions that could mimic the effects of a number of unicorn spells. Or grant temporary magical power of one variety or another.

I can see that...but...I don't know...it's like, Twilight studies hard to release her natural potential...gathering magical charms always seemed...'cheap'...to me.

@ Lopiny

Brain juice basically?

I so want the Derpy changeling to become a recurring antagonist in the comic. She and Doomie can be like, the Team Rocket of ponies or something. Talking pet cat optional.

So earth ponies could be sort of like Witchers then, focusing a lot on augmentation via potions and the like rather than actual spells.

[up]This needs to be a spinoff.

Earth Ponies would also have better Craftskill affinity, so they can make some really powerful items with some training.

I need to see more of Zecora in action. That might help...EP's could probably do what Zebras do.

on ho magic works, I'm more wiling to go with the Belgariad appraoch, since it seems to be all mental, and "spells" are simply differnt ways of forming the thoughts required to trigger a required action. Actaully if anything, it's closest to how Dresden-verse magic works

In that verse, it is theoretically possible to do any and all magic completely mentally, it's simply that doing so is almost impossible because it requires keeping the entire spell in your thoughts, to every last detail, and focusing it, properly. Things like magic circles, incantations, staffs, wands, etc... simply serve as a focus, something that takes the place of part of the mental construct or helps focus magic.

Yeah, I've always thought of them as being able to maximize the magic potential of plants and such. Kinda like what Zecora does.

Tying it in with my work (sorry sorry, but it's why I ask these questions)...booze as potions? What do you think?

Magic Rum?

[up]

Do you think they could shape shift and teleport like Zecora?

Like mixing an augmentation potion with drunken boxing?

I don't see why alcohol couldn't be used as the base for a potion.

The current evidence seems to suggest that Zecroa's real magic is something completely different and much more subtle, yet certainly not passive. I'm not entirely convinced that Zecora is actively using magic when brewing potions as opposed to just mixing together already magical plants.

[up][up]What suggests that Zecora can shapeshift?

Respect. Though I've found it's a bit hard to implement meta-magics for prepared casters in some cases since you can never quite tell what you might need and you only have so many spell slots.

Or you could go Incantrix and prepare ALL THE METAMAGICS.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.

EDIT:

So a rum could be a magic potion? I was hoping so.
