I think Still Spell makes the spell occupy a spell slot one level above the unaugmented pell.
Journalism is just a gun. It's only got one bullet in it, but if you aim right, that's all you need.
@Crow: That changeling was like a musician called upon to play his greatest hit, even though he hates that song.
Yeah. So I mean, you're basically pulling one level less than you could otherwise... but you can make up for it by being a magical tank. Especially if you had a buff spell in there for defense.
So, Alchemy and herbology? I'd say those are logical fits for Earth Pony magic. I even think I suggested something similar some time ago.

Not to mention their touch AC would be a joke and they'd likely lose any dex bonuses they might otherwise have. Besides, I know of few people who want to be reduced to a 15-20 foot movement.

Maybe an earth pony could carry around a whole lot of artifacts that are enchanted or that have spells stored in them to be used whenever.
@ Apple: Well, I'd argue they couldn't do anything, but I can imagine potions that could mimic the effects of a number of unicorn spells. Or grant temporary magical power of one variety or another.

I so want the Derpy changeling to become a recurring antagonist in the comic. She and Doomie can be like, the Team Rocket of ponies or something. Talking pet cat optional.
Earth Ponies would also have better Craftskill affinity, so they can make some really powerful items with some training.
Yeah, I've always thought of them as being able to maximize the magic potential of plants and such. Kinda like what Zecora does.
I see Magical Rum as a plausible extension of alchemy

Respect. Though I've found it's a bit hard to implement meta-magics for prepared casters in some cases since you can never quite tell what you might need and you only have so many spell slots.
Or you could go Incantrix and prepare ALL THE METAMAGICS.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
