Yeah, I think it's about the skill making them feel good about themselves, making them think I want to do this forever, rather than being good at it initially.

Here's a philosophical question for you's...can a pony earn a CM for something that they aren't actually very good (at least initially?)

Yeah, I think so. Some people get good at thing because they're naturally talented, some only get good through continuous effort because they're interested. I figure it's the same for them.

Since we were talking about Derpy's CM the other day I thought of my own interpretation. The bubbles represents her love of simple but pointless enjoyment. Basically, she's good at always finding fun in simple life, despite having no particular skill or talent at anything. Some would probably find that sad, but I disagree.

You know what, I don't even want to know.

I am morbidly curious.

Maybe there's a giftedly bad pony out there with a cutie mark of something they suck at. Hmmm...
Oh, the thread? Don't worry, it's just dead.

@Kyler: Ask Pregnant Scootaloo, it's a wierd premise revolving around Scoots getting knocked up and playing it seriously.

What? How...how does that work?

@ talents

Dam...maybe they do have to be good at it.

I actually think Pinkie Pie's a good example of it. She throws a good party, sure, but she's only good at one type of party, regardless of its appropriateness. For example, if her talents really covered parties in general, then she wouldn't have had problems at the Gala and that garden party in Sweet and Elite. She just so passionate about making ponies happy, though, that she doesn't care. From the moment she was able to make her family smile, she knew what she wanted to do with her life.

Actually, yeah, Pinkie is probably a better example than Fluttershy.

Ask Pregnant Scootaloo? Uh, is it a future Scootaloo, or...

But what about Fluttershy?

Her parents are strong flyers and insisted on putting her through flight camp. They just can't understand anypony not wanting to fly.

@Apple: I think when Rarity first got her CM, her first designs were rather...raw. It seems the CM appears when a pony finds their passion (or their perceived 'purpose'). Following practice can make one better but not always so.

Other ponies, just like humans in real life, will be 'naturally' better at it.

That is a good point. Just because it's your special talent doesn't mean you have master-level proficiency in it from the start.

@ Lurker

So...using that same train of thought, if a little colt made food that was inedible...but a lump of said food was fired from a catapult and ends up sinking a pirate ship, which causes much rejoicing from his friends...he might still earn a cooking CM?

@ Rainbow

Yeah, that too. Makes sense!

@App:Idk but that's a pretty hilarious CM story. You should totally use it.

And last time I tried to argue that Magic Kindergerten was part of Celestia's school, almost everyone disagreed with me.

I still don't think Magic Kindergarden actually exists.

But...all this time...I thought you were Applejack.

No, that's Ilsemmr.

Actually it does often give you a good idea of what will happen.

What if the colt was a Nelson Muntz type, who believes that this food is now 'stalliony...for real stallions only!'

@ kyler

The fruitcake could be 'armor piecing ammunation' for use against Ironclads.

Well, certain cheeses can be used as cannonballs, so who knows.

My personal take on the C Ms is that while they might not initially be good at it, it indicates that 1. they'll always enjoy doing it and 2. they'll eventually develop that skill if they don't already have it. Like somepony could get a CM for drawing even if they currently can't draw, but they realize that they enjoy doing it and want to actively develop that skill.

@App:Well I don't know who that is but sounds alright. Is the crew gonna be all male? That'd be pretty different, since there's not very many male characters in the show or in the fan works.

It's a crew of six stallions with British accents...two of each tribe. Male characters are so rare in this show, I think I can get away with it. And you don't know Nelson 'HA HA!' Muntz from The Simpsons?

@ JT

Yes that's exactly what I thought so too.

Dogs Dinner!

How's that for a name for the bad chef! [lol]

EDIT: Or...he could be called Salty Dog, or Dog Biscuit or something similar...and he treats his friends to a 'Dog's Dinner'!

Dog's Dinner sounds a bit too awkward for a name.

Cutie marks? I once read a WMG claiming that a pony has their cutie mark briefly upon their birth, which explains the surprisingly accurate names. So, I'm sticking with that.
