I just don't understand why anyone would design a mall with only an up escalator. Shouldn't there be a down escalator too, or at least have stairs or something?

I'm reminded of the chapter in Wayside School Gets a Little Stranger where the principal installs elevators. But he insists on them being used in an orderly fashion, so he installs one elevator that can only go up, and another that can only go down. The last lines of the chapter are "They worked perfectly. Once."

That would be running a punchline into the ground.
