@Irish: Well she wanted a power boost to best Twilight, but presumably it was the amulet's influence that made her enslave the town after she won. She wasn't that big of a jerk before.

@Irish We don't know her original intent for getting it. Perhaps she was just tired of being weak?

@Irish: My guess is that she had some vague idea of restoring her honor by defeating Twilight and wanted to use the amulet to give herself a leg up. Unfortunately, we don't see what her original goal is. She could have started with the goal of just beating Twilight to save her reputation and nothing more, and then amulet just caused the escalation. After it gets removed, she mellows out quite a bit, even though if anything her reputation is worse now.

I think the amulet amplified what she was already feeling, so she's like a mini-Luna.

@Zmobie: I estimate maybe half-and-half.

Or, to be more elaborate, at the beginning, she just wanted to beat Twilight in a duel just to prove she was better. But then the amulet's influence started to kick in, and her motives get twisted to become more and more venomous. As time went on, it started becoming less of Trixie's original intent and more of the amulet's corruption.

yeah, pretty sure it just amplified her negative feelings, she got it to beat Twilight, but the went Drunk on the Dark Side and turned into evil dictator.

That's the other problem. I think they exaggerated Fluttershy's meekness a bit too much.

We're talking about the same character who got scared of a leaf and her own shadow, right?

Her problems here had nothing to do with assertiveness. She was just afraid of things, and got pushed along before she could take the requisite time to gather her courage.
