Finally got round to watching Too Many Pinkies, okay episode, not the best, but it's...fun.tongue

As usual Pinkie ranges from funny to annoying, I also found it amusing how underwelming the others' reactions to her duplicates were (RD even shrugs), like they're just accepting she can do anything.

People really liked this episode then?

[up]I could accuse the same to you for placing that title onto anything other than "Lesson Zero".tongue

@Psi 001: Quite a few people did, including myself. But I'm probably already a heretic in your book since Lesson Zero is one of my most hated episodes, so yeah.tongue

I think it was above average, but it's hardly the best episode. I don't think it's even the best Pinkie episode; no way did it beat Party of One.

There were some parts of the episode that I really liked, but overall, the episode felt rather average for me. Entertaining for a while, but I doubt I'd rewatch it on my own.

Yeah, I felt like it hit Pinkie's characterization out of the park, but the way it handled some of the other aspects (Twilight's characterization, the fact that Spike just happens to stumble across the right book, etc.) were a bit more uneven.

My whole set of thoughts on the episode is here.

Party of One nailed Pinkie's character and handled the non-Pinkie bits really well.

Eh, I think this one did Pinkie's character development better then Party of One did.

one of the comments from the 60s Celestia pic that's good enough to post here

This is my view of a 1, 000 years ago.

“Sister, we hath be wondering what thou hast done with our Donna Summer vinyl recordings?”

“Grooviest Sister, we hath bartered them away to the Griffon Kingdom in return for these hip new vinyl recordings.”

“…‘Michael Jackson’? Ist that not the foal from that Jackson 5 musical quintet? Avast sister! He shall never last!”

They're comparable, but I don't know if I'd go that far. Party of One was good in that it explored Pinkie's self-identity through a more mundane set of circumstances. It took the dominant aspect of her personality and basically deconstructed it by showing what happens when she loses it, and why. TMPP does something similar; it takes Pinkie's surface personality and picks it apart by showing that there's more too her than that.

But I think what causes Party of One to edge out ahead for me is the fact that in that episode, the conflict is entirely character based rather than requiring an outside trigger to kick off her breakdown. It developed more naturally in conjunction with the other characters as opposed to TMPP which largely had Pinkie hatch the scheme entirely on her own. Party of One had a bit more conflict between Pinkie Pie and her friends, whereas TMPP has the conflict almost entirely internalized.

I like TMPP because it seems specifically designed to counter the "Pinkie is a flat gag machine" ideology that tends to crop up when she doesn't get a character focus episode for a while. It decides to show you what it would be like if she really was that shallow, and then multiply it by 20 for maximum effectiveness.

@J Teeth: I guess I like TMPP more because like Lurker it specifically confronted the fact that Pinkie can seem very one-dimensional both in and out of universe. Also I liked that TMPP seemed like a triumph for Pinkie as a character, where as Party of One feels like a narrowly averted disaster that has a high chance of repeating itself.

Indeed, I'm not saying that TMPP didn't handle Pinkie's character really well (it's pretty much a perfect proof that she isn't nearly as flat as some people make her out to be), I'm just saying that I tend to prefer it when the conflict arises as a result of character interaction rather than as a result of a Zany Scheme.

In terms of characterizing Pinkie, they're pretty much even. It's the other aspects of the episodes that push Party Of One ahead.

And with that, I go to sleep. See you guys later.
