Hi folks!
Only watched last episode from
YouTube last night.
I didn't like it.
Fi M has two kind of episodes: slice of life and adventure. In general I would prefer adventure. But this series best is on the slice of life ones. Let me explain why:
This is a series about human relationships. When they do "adventure" episodes, they make abstract nouns become "real". Like Discord is a character, not real discord between ponies. And they still pass a message, but as a metaphor. Slice of life, instead, show in practice how relationships work, with examples.
In this 3rd season premiere, hatred and sadness are mystical forces threatening the crystal ponies to literally vanish. Dark shadows touch the ponies and make them sad for no real reason other than "it's magic". This is not bad per se, but it's weak compared to when Fluttershy said mean things and made Pinkie and Rarity cry in the minotaur episode.
In "the art of the dress" Rarity, because of her generosity, tries too hard to please her friends, and epic fails at the fashion show because of that. Then she recluses herself and keeps crying on bed. I mean, it's not like "the spirit of generosity" appeared and make her "destroy" the dresses, or a villain sabotaged them before the show, or "Reclusion" got back from a 1000 years exile and locked her inside the room. In "applebuck season", there was no "Hard Work Spirit" appearing to cast a "sleep deprivation" spell on Applejack.
To be fair, I was expecting a "metaphor" episode already. But still... when the crystal ponies said "I feel there's something missing" I noticed there were no kids in the CE. I though "the secret to defeat the King of Shadows will be they rediscover how to form families and have children and be happy and full of love again." But it turned out it was just a
MacGuffin.
