I must to say that episode growing on me (that I start to love more, and maybe soon it will be my favorite episode).

Unlike Wedding eps (mostly second part), what had huge impact on me from first viewing (it's because I didn't expect to be that epic).

Hm. Interesting theory via reddit(which is, in retrospect, sort of obvious) - Sombra is basically a metaphor for depression. The citizens all looked pretty depressed, they couldn't remember a time they were happy, Sombra was nothing any of them could truly see but they could all feel lingering around...

It's very in-keeping of the shows villainous themes so far. NNM was a representation of Envy, Discord of cruelty/chaos, Chrysalis of greed(in a way)...

And Windegos were hatred/intolerance. Nice theming!

Doesn't Sombra's magic run on The Power of Hate, though?

[up][up][up]Interesting theory.

But Sombra was more element of cruelty than Discord.

Well, as far as villains are concerned, the first was effectively insane, the second ws batshit insane and the third only lost due to a deus ex machina.

Deus Ex Machina?

Is it a deus ex machina for the power of love to defeat the villain when it's established through the same villain that the power of love can be used as a massively powerful source of magic and energy?

Yeah, I don't think it's quite a Deus ex Machina. However, I am glad they required some sort of magical artifact to take out Sombra rather than just "Even though he won we have love power lol".

G3 Rarity was identified as a Crystal Princess too, and has similar colors to Cadance. o.o

I don't think Sombra seemed to run on hate... if anything he ran on fear/sorrow. The black magic seemed to be a dampener - everything around it looked darker, but not more hateful Gray, not red, basically.

I don't think he ran on sorrow, just that he caused it.

Yeah, he's an "ordinary" unicorn, not a force of nature like the Wendigos or an alien presence like the Changelings. However, he certainly cemented his rule through the use of fear and sorrow. He had to have been quite cruel and hated for him to be sure nobody would dare enter his throne room.

he didn't lose because he got cocky and just stood there/wouldn't shut up.

Pretty much.

Really, I give Sombra A+ for effort.

Indeed, Sombra is practically a fridge villain. At first I wasn't really impressed, but the more you think about how he worked, the more formidable he seems.

Quite. Even when he broke his horn off on the barrier, he still took the iniiative to use it to spread a corruption inside the barrier, and then grew it back anyway.

So, why did he lose his shadow form at the end, there?

Pure determination and/or being near the Crystal Heart.

More dramatic that way? Maybe he was regaining his power or something.

So, something interesting noted in this image. It seems that only the female crystal ponies have angular eyes glints, the male crystal ponies have normal circular eye glints.

You know, I would like to see the mane cast defeating a major villain with their own power; not with the Elements, just their own magical, intellectual, and physical power.

He's a smoke cloud with a stairs fetish.
