The Crystal Empire was formed from the remnants of the Earth Ponies who stayed behind when Chancellor Puddinghead migrated to Equestria. As Earth Ponies weren't ruled by any central authority, unlike the Pegasi and Unicorns, only they remained. Also Sombra was the first Unicorn born to Earth Pony parents for a looong time, and turned to dark magic after being considered an outcast by his peers.

@Enlong: Pretty much how I feel. The guy is the epitome of Crazy-Prepared (seriously, he had like a bazillion spells guarding the heart), we just didn't get to see the setup and have to piece it together afterward.

I never saw Nightmare Moon as a curse, honestly. More likely they turned evil due to similar circumstances. While Luna corrupted her own magic due to her negative emotions, Sombra... Uh...
