Sombra was pretty flat as a character, the other villains were much more live.

Maybe having dialogue helped.

Well, this is what I get for having my hopes up in terms of villains.
I don't konw what to think, anymore.

Maybe the book is the Crystal Empire history book?
IIRC, the history book had a brown cover, while Luna's book had a black cover.
That would be running a punchline into the ground.

Oh. Luna has a Chekov's Grimoire for some reason.

However, the villain this ep was completely disappointing/boring.

To be honest, I don't really care about Sombra at all. This episode was solidly Twilight's show :)
Spooky.

Well, that was certainly something. It was a good episode, although I don't think it was quite as amazing as the season 2 premiere and finale. Sombra really needed a bit more characterization, and I felt like there was too much of a disconnect between what Twilight was doing and what the rest of the cast was up to. It would have helped a lot of Sombra would have actually had some sort of personality past "generically evil".

That said, the humor was good as always, and it was sweet to see Spike finally do something important. And in the last few minutes when Sombra actually did something other than being ominous it was pretty cool. And the animation was awesome.

Sombra is just a shadow of his former self.

Twi is gonna level up!
Yeah, that's going to be interesting. What is it going to be? The obvious guess would be Twalicorn, but I doubt that that's going to be the case...
But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

Sombra certainly didn't have much personality, but he made up for it with some pretty awesome traps and planning. Not to mention that his powers were really awesome. The real meat of the episode was in the character development, anyway. Season-spanning arc, ho!

Yeah, I have to give him some props for his abilities and foresight, but it would have been a lot stronger if he had felt like a person rather than just a vague "force".

[up]I wish I could but I just do not have time for that now. I might do an abbreviated version, but doing the full 5K word things isn't gonna happen.

For some reason I'd kinda like to see Somber get built up as the bad guy only for it to turn out that he's actually trying to be a good guy.

Well you got it half right.

Yeah Sombra wasn't the best, but still cool, and competent given all the stuff he set up

also wild mass guess He's not gone, you clearly saw his intact horn flying away after the explosion. he'll regenerate and be back throughout the season.wild mass guess

I wonder if this series will have any real villain that lasts more than two episodes.

Nah.

Still, that leaves a lot of room for fanfiction writers. How many Start of Darkness stories about Sombra are going to appear now?

Rarity liked it the most. Yeah, I think the point is to get Twi to a different place. It wasn't necessarily about beating a villain.

Oh, and you know what else? The "Previously on" bit for the second part is now the perfect thing to show someone to convince them that FIM isn't just a little kids show.

It's like 100% High Fantasy adventure.
