Yay.

She thinks about herself too much.

Family members don't have to share a name though. Just look at Rarity.

It doesn't have to be by any stretch. But the alternative is that Rarity is one of those "I only need one name!" celebrities and we can't afford to feed her ego too much.

Are you saying Cherilee is a celebrity? Or Fluttershy?

Theme naming seems to exist, though.

I'm sort of of the opinion that family names exist for the VERY upper class, or the very prolific, at least. Usually taken from a portion of the founding member's name. Whether or not they're universally used in the family's names is one thing, but they still might go by the 'Smile Family', or the Star Family, or the Apple Family, etc.

I'd say it's less about "upper class" and more about families that simply have a long history and are very close knit and proud of their family as a whole, the ones that are closer to clans then just family, like the Apples or the Pies. It's about being part of that family meaning something very very deeply to them beyond just it being the ponies they love and are related to.

In the olden days they engaged in Heraldry.

I think that it's relatively common (at least, far more common than among Western Culture humans) for ponies to change their own names once they get their cutie marks, or upon adulthood.

But they seem to know where they are going, the ones who walk away from Omelas.

Well, when I said 'I'm of the opinion' I meant mostly in fanon - since aside fro mthe Apple clan we've seen no family's with family names(aside from Maybe Pinkie Pie, so maybe it's an EP thing?), wheras I've written two upper class families with family names.

But you're most likely right, any family that feels like it's large enough and, well, family enough, will probably title itself eventually.

Where's Steve when you need a darker fanon explanation?

Yeah, I'm in the group that tends to think that each family probably has their own naming conventions.

I think E Ps have stronger family ties than the other two tribes...the Apples, the Cakes, the Pies etc. Not that the others don't have strong family ties of course.

Hold over from pre-classical days? Earth pony society was based along your family, Pegasi your rank, and Unicorn your own personal power/standing at court.

The Apples do seem to have an awful lot of relatives, and Aunt and Uncle Orange are probably pretty distant relations.
