Seeing as the changeling attack started midway through their son's wedding, I doubt they were off doing whatever you're thinking of.
And they do have a lot of books at home. Remember in Cutie Mark Chronicles where it shows Twilight in their house reading all of those books?

floating around is that a number of the Canterlot Ponies really are too soft to survive the wilds in any capacity, unlike the residents of say, Ponyville (Everfree outpost town) or Appleloosa (Frontier town).
Up til now, IIRC all the rooms Twi has ever used for her bedrooms are always full of books.
