I've actually been in AJ's position, and pretty much did the same thing she did. "I said I would do <X>, and I haven't yet. Clearly the only solution is to cut myself off from the outside world until I've done <X> all by myself!" No, it's not rational, but it's understandable.

I actually think that happened.

And it meant that:

Rainbow got laxative in her next meal.
All her toilets were clogged with toilet paper.
All the public toilets were mysteriously occupied.

Eventually, it wore off after a couple of days, then:

Rarity had Twilight cast the cloudwalking spell, went to Rainbow's house, and dumped all the toilet contents into her fireplace while shouting "YOU'RE GETTING SHIT FOR HEARTH'S WARMING EVE!"

Rainbow never abandoned her friends in a desert again.
