I remember that in the actual episode he had some kind of little harness...though he didn't have to click a button to take pictures.

It's the same camera harness that was used by the tabloid journalists in Green Isn't Your Color. Definitely a creative solution. They probably just flex their shoulders in a specific way to push on the harness, which raises the camera to eye level, and pushing it a little farther takes the picture.
