I remember when EQD did a fanfic contest about short fanfics with RD trying and failing at cooking. Some of them were pretty funny, one of them was actually kinda sad, and others were just Blah.
I have to say, I find myself anticipating Steve's reaction.
As I find so much pleasure in that melts away as I breath, I am always full of regret.

Japanese Teeth actually did a rather logical analysis as to why Twilight would come to such an assumption, in that she's a good student, she excels and thus insists on being perfect, but because of that she's completely unused to the idea of failing in anything and what sort of reprecussions it could bring.
A big part in Twilight's social awkwardness is inexperience, she doesn't know what standards people hold her by so immediately assumes one slip up and she's a town pariah (this also perked up in Boast Busters).

@J Teeth: We've seen Spike help with cooking, but that was just supplying the flame. I don't know if he'd be any good actually preparing ingredients. Although I wouldn't be surprised if he's good at it for the sake of fetching Twi a snack while she's studying.

@Steve: You're gonna have a lot of fun with this episode...
Except that she came to the exact same kind of conclusion in A Bird in Hoof in regards to what punishment Celestia would dole out. I'd say that she just really fears her as well as respects her.

heh, don't fuck with the shy.
Also, you now know why there will be no wars in the series, all the other nations now know that Equestria is the only nation with a mobile WMD delivery system that can strike anywhere.

Build a fool proof system, and the world will create a better fool.

It's okay, you just need some context.
That bear was kind of a dick.

But doesn't the Soviet Union have one too?
That's why there are no wars.
No, that bear just happened to talk smack about Angel, so 'Shy killed him.

@Perpetual: They're similar, but there's a few key differences. One being that unless Equestria has really lax property laws, Fluttershy technically committed a crime by stealing the monarch's pet, so while she overblew the reaction by a lot, I don't think she was off in assuming that Fluttershy might receive some sort of punishment.
In this episode, it's fairly obvious that her anxiety is almost entirely due to stress and her own high expectations causing her to project onto Celestia; she holds herself to such a high standard that she assumes Celestia will hold her to that same standard.
@Lurker: Lesson Zero however also had different circumstances in that Twilight had supposedly disobeyed a direct order.
Most kids fear peers as well as respect them though. How many of us were terrified of angering our parents or teachers as a kid?

Element of Loyalty is not bound by petty physics.

@Psi: I know I was, it's why I can sympathize with Twilight so much in that episode. That was really the basis of my rationalization for Twilight's reaction; she's never really had a gratuitous failure before and she has no sense of context for what it's like to botch something this important.
