Thanks Mio. I have to admit, I think I agree with the fanon about them being longtime friends.
I certainly like the idea, as it gives RD a bit more depth. You wouldn't expect somepony like her to befriend a meek pony like Fluttershy, so it shows that even then there was an element of loyalty to her character.
@Blue: At the bottom of
this page
Ace called "Hurricane Fluttershy" the "best Fluttershy episode"; Perpetual countered that it was actually the best Rainbow Dash episode. The bit I quoted is near the bottom of the following page.
@Dot: Great art, cool story, insanely creative. Definitely recommended. You might appreciate how much
Darker and Edgier it is than
Catscratch.
My one complaint about
Doug TenNapel (not just
Gear but every comic of his I've read) is his tendency for completely unnecessary monologues during action scenes. Stuff happens, and whatever character is watching at the moment will describe what's happening to no one in particular. Annoying, but not a dealbreaker.
Closer than your breath. Quicker than the hands of death. Closer.
A lot of people would probably agree with you, but I just feel that their early interaction (particularly Dragonshy) and the lack of knowledge on RD's part of FS past(Hurricane Fluttershy), seems to suggest otherwise.
Not to mention the scene in "Griffon the Brush Off" where Pinkie Pie knew that Fluttershy wouldn't respond well to pranking, but Rainbow Dash didn't.
Closer than your breath. Quicker than the hands of death. Closer.
I gotta go with Mio on this one. It seems to me that while RD has known FS from an early age, their relationship has only grown over the past year or two since the events of the pilot.

I think it really depends on how you define "friendship" in this case. I think they likely knew each other for quite a while, but only really grew close after Twilight moved in.
For me, I believe they were merely good acquaintances until they came together.
Ditto, out of all the episodes, I think that one handled Dash's character better than any of her other focus episodes, mainly because every other episode that focuses on Dash tends to be about her weaknesses. Sonic Rainboom was about her performance anxiety, Fall Weather Friends was about her overcompetitiveness, MMDW was about...everything. Hurricane Fluttershy was one of the few episodes with her in focus that shows her in a primarily positive light.
Reading Rainbow or whatever showed her in a relatively positive light too, but a lot of it's plot was focused on Daring instead.
Yeah, RIAW wasn't the greatest reflection of her character either, she starts of writing off the idea of reading because it's for eggheads, and then once she admits to herself that she likes it she chooses to break into a hospital because she's to embarrassed to just borrow Twilight's copy. Yes, she comes out ahead in the end, but the entire episode was basically about how she learned to get over her anti-reading bias.
Yeah but she wasn't unlikable.
Gotta sleep. Night folks.

@Likability is pretty much how I rate RD episodes though. I don't like the ones that turn her flaws up to eleven losing everything great about her character in the process.
Elizabeak is the only chicken whose name is mentioned (besides Scootaloo, of cou-*shot*
I'm pretty sure Henrietta was named at some point too.
Life is simple: it has no nontrivial normal subgroups.
@Bluespade: Fair enough. This season hasn't exactly been kind on RD in that respect.
