Yeah, looking at their interactions in season 1, it might be more plausible to say that RD and FS knew each other in school, but they grew apart after getting their cutie marks, and didn't reconnect until Nightmare Moon's return. Why did they grow apart? Maybe FS was angry that RD didn't make any effort to save her; maybe RD thought FS' interest in animals was unbecoming of a pegasus.

No, but I did read Gear, the comicbook that was a very, very loose inspiration for it.

What was this in response too? I'm kind of interested but I don't want to dig through 20 pages.

Regarding RD and Fluttershy, I don't think there's a whole lot of basis for that either. In the pilot they seem more or less entirely neutral towards each other. It's probably most likely that they were on good terms after the Rainboom, but not necessarily close friends. Sort of like how everybody has semi-friends that you get along with because your circumstances cause you to interact on a regular basis, but you don't really go out of your way to hang out with them either. I get the idea that RD and Fluttershy got along well enough, but their differing interests didn't make them inclined to really interact much outside of flight school. I mean, there had to be more than one occasion where RD had to protect Fluttershy from bullies.
