But I loved the way the writers lampshaded it, by having the alicorn Status Quo go mad with power, and the CMC got their marks by defeating her.

nonono, the epsode where AB got the Golf Club CM was all a dream where the CMC got CM's in stuff that they hated. It was this that lead to them realizing they had to find what they LIKED to find their CM and focus on that,
