[up] People give things names as a joke.

Look at Cuddly-Wuddly Syndrome in Dwarf Fortress. No-one actually thinks it's a disease. It's just a fun shorthand for a thing cats do to dwarves.

Pagetopper!

I have sometimes seen Twilight's as part of CMFIS, even though most (if not all) of her breakdowns have nothing to do with her special talent (MAGIC). So yeah, make of that what you will.

[up][up]Even if it had started as a joke, some people still take it at face value. That was what I was attempting to refute (and nothing in your post suggested that you were joking).

[up]And yeah, that's another point against it.

Off the top of my head, I know that Sereg has used it in a fanfic of his, and that Seraphem takes to the idea (I ended up debating the topic with him last time it came up).

It's just a name used as a convenient way of reffering to certain conditions. I see CMFIS as what ponies have instead of having a mid- and quater-life crisis. They're actually related. In both cases, the individual experiences doubt about their achievements, abilities and purpose (roughly. It's an oversimplified comparison.).

Maybe it just rubs me the wrong way because I've been there and had to claw my way out of it, and having people suggest that it's just something as simple as self-doubt amplified by the mere existence of cutie marks cheapens the whole thing.

I actually think it is an interesting concept from an in-universe perspective. I could see certain pony psychiatrist (or what ever the equivalent) claiming it does exist while other ponies call the concept ridiculous and all the weird politics that things like that inspire.

I wonder what kind of mental disease that barking patient from the Daring Do episode had.
Humans can be more malignant than Hell at its worst, yet could also occasionally show more grace than Heaven at its best.

Hi Applelight! I can't always keep up, but I try.

@Perpetual Lurker: You mean suffered from clinical depression? So have I. As I said, it's just a name used for convenience. Plus, I'm of the belief that cutie marks amplify the talents that they represent. Enhanced mental instability is the tradeoff price that the speciespays for the ability to be exceptionally good at anything. IMO it's still too small a price to prevent them from easily becoming the dominant species even if there were humans around. Not to mention that this is natural for their species. Sort of like how aerial, arboreal and pelagic species would consider us mentaly deficient when it comes to our ability to think in three dimensions.

EDIT: [up]That could probably be mapped to a real life condition. But I'm not an expert.

The last few minutes of the episode was so much win. I especially loved this whole "Rainbow Dash is stealing the slippers!" gag.

CMFIS: What does that stand for? CM obviously means Cutie Mark and S is Sundrome. What about the rest?

@Sereg: So ponies are Sparks?

As for Twilight's breakdowns, they're usually related to her magic teacher who is naturally very linked to her studies on magic.

EDIT: I've actually yet to read Girl Genius, but from the little I know, yes. CMFIS stands for Cutie Mark Failure Insanity Syndrome, a fanon term for the tendency for ponies to snap when their ability to live up to their special talent is called into question.

[up][up] Cutie Mark Failure Insanity Syndrome. Shorthand for those situations where a pony fails at a cutie-mark-related task and freaks out; AJ in Applebuck Season, Fluttershy in The Best Night Ever, Dash in Sonic Rainboom, Pinkie Pie in Party of One; Rarity in Suited for Success; Twilight whenever she's worried about disappointing Celestia.

Also this. The way I portray Equestria in fanfic is close but not identical to the way that I believe it is in canon. For a start, I don't actually believe that Derpy has any children at all (she's too young without time travel, which, despite the fact that I used that as a plot point in my fic, I don't consider it likely).

EDIT:[up]WAIT, WHAT!?

I personally like that fanon. It's one of most cleaver concepts created by fandom.

Anypony know where it's started?

Didn't you hear? Season three actually started two weeks ago. I'm still waiting on when Season four is going to start.
